A Moment in Kyoto · Dawn
Before the Shutters Lift
Feels like having Kyoto's old streets to yourself.

The Story
We meet below the Yasaka Pagoda at sunrise, while the stone lanes are still empty and the shopkeepers are sweeping their doorsteps. We walk slowly up through Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, pausing at doorways and corners where the light falls softly.
I'll ask you to slow down, stand still and look somewhere other than the camera. It sounds simple, and it's why the photos feel so calm. We end on a quiet side street I keep as a surprise. Every gallery comes in both colour and black and white.

Getting up at five was absolutely worth it. We had Ninenzaka almost to ourselves and the photos look timeless.
Aya's direction is so gentle. The black-and-white set made my partner cry, in a good way.
Beautiful, quiet photos. The early start was tough with jet lag, but I'd do it again.
